Mi cuerpo es mi país, The body as the scene in the current Cuban Photography, 2014.

The light in cuban eyes

In 2002, art collector and philanthropist Madeleine P. Plonsker began traveling to Cuba to uncover Havana’s thriving art scene. The Light in Cuban Eyes: Lake Forest College’s Madeleine P. Plonsker Collection of Contemporary Cuban Photography focuses on Cuban photography between 1992 and 2012. These years cover Cuba’s “Special Period,” a desperate time resulting from the withdrawal of financial support from the former Soviet Union that continues to present day. The fifty artists represented in this bilingual book—including Juan Carlos Alom, Adrián Fernández Milanés, Marta María Pérez Bravo, Cirenaica Moreira, and Glenda León—shoot their worlds in styles ranging from fabulist to gritty. This is world-class work, yet the artists are often known only to the small population of collectors fortunate enough to have traveled to this tightly restricted country, or through art world reputations that have only recently started to expand beyond the island.

The Other Side of the Soul

El otro lado del alma is not an ethnological exhibition. It is a show on Contemporary Cuban Photography, with a thematic focus on a cultural phenomenon. El otro lado del alma is not an anthology of Cuban photography. Yet, it does give an idea of the various artistic tendencies in contemporary artistic creation in Cuba. El otro lado del alma does not repeat the classic clichés on Cuba, such as vintage cars, Che Guevara and the deterioration of Old Havana. It was co-produced by (and for) Cuba’s National Museum of Photography and therefore gives an inside view in contemporary Cuban live, that takes place far from the tourist attractions (but sometimes also near to them).

Open maps: Latin American Photography 1991-2002

OPEN MAPS makes a fascinating tour of Latin American photography through the proposals that emerged during the nineties. The identity, individual and collective memory, the body, mythology approached from new perspectives, cities and private spaces, politics and critical positions on the societies in which they live, are some of the arguments deployed in this sample. The nineties demonstrates the ideology of the authors deep and intense relationship with their environment, but also the emergence of alternatives to institutional speeches and a look toward minorities, poverty and violence radically different from the stereotypes: a kind of rewriting the past and the contemporary history.

Trance

Born in Guanabacoa and living in Regla, both religious centers in Cuba, Pupo has a long association with Santería (Regla de Ocha), and voodoo. Through photography the artist rediscovers his religion from a new perspective, as a philosophy about life where the visions of the individual serve as doors to access the real world, and provide the true way to "see" what is around us. ISBN 0-9721436-6-1, 9 x 6 inches, 36 pages, limited edition of 1,000 copies, $30.
